Return of the Living Razor Clams

by Rob Endsley 16. November 2009 08:31

This weekends coastal razor clam dig was the perfect opportunity to top of our nearly full freezer with some of the finest eating critters on the West Coast. Nicole and I rendesvous'd near Ocean Shores, Washington with my parents, Rob Tobeck and his wife Sonya, Bear Holmes of the CCA, and Gabe Miller from Sportco for some fun in the sand and surf chasing the elusive, cunning, and clever razor clam. We weren't alone either, as the beach was lined with thousands of people as far as you could see in either direction. If you're looking for a really fun activity that the entire family can enjoy...this is it!

Here's a short video I just slapped together of the clam digging session on Saturday:

RAZOR CLAM DIGGING

We found plenty of big razors like this one well before the bottom of the big minus tide.

Bear Holmes, myself, and Robbie Tobeck all dug limits of razor clams in short order on Saturday before heading off to Duggan's Pizza in Ocean Shores for pizza and libations.

When Tobeck wasn't looking his wife asked if she could pet my beaver. Well, of course you can. Just don't tell Robbie!

Nothing like a Jennings/Heins sweatshirt to keep you warm on those Washington winter days. Nicole with a good mess of razors prior to vacuum packing. Hint...they vacuum pack a lot easier once you drain them.

Check that one off the list! With plenty of salmon, halibut, venison, and razor clams in the freezer the next few months are going to be spent chasing steelhead, ducks, and geese. A huge storm is hammering Western Washington right now, bringing with it high winds and as much as 20 inches of rain. Bad for fishing...PERFECT for duck hunting!
